Beth

By the time we approached Nox’s house on Grosvenor Street, I had slipped into some sort of stupefied daze. My tears had stopped, but a sort of numbness had taken me. The driver hadn’t made it in twenty minutes, but he scraped just under thirty. I paid him the extra, then jogged up the steps to the front door. My legs were leaden, the showdown with Banks starting to take its toll. Adrenaline was still coursing through me, making my hands shake as I grabbed the knocker. It didn’t even occur to me to use my new key.

The door opened.

"Nox-" I began, but his face darkened, and he stepped toward me, sweeping me into his arms.

“That's... Sulphur." He tensed, and heat surged from him. "What happened?"

"Banks. With his own pet Hellhound." Nox pushed me back to look into my face. Hot anger poured from his body. “And… My Mom saved me. She knocked Banks and the Hellhound out with some sort of green magic, and now… Now she’s gone again.”

I saw his eyes widen, then soften. “Come inside.”

Nox led us to a room I hadn't been in before, at the back of the ground floor of the house. It was a sitting room with two large white leather couches, and a big shagpile rug in the middle of the room. Tall art deco lamps stood in each corner, and a huge fireplace with a marble mantle dominated the back wall. The firewood in the hearth was unlit.

He sat me down on the couch, then crouched in front of me and locked his eyes on my face. His heat had lessened, but his expression was still severe. He gripped my hand in his, and that delicious blanket of warmth engulfed me. My mind cleared a little, and air seemed to flow into my lungs better. “Tell me what happened."

“Banks was waiting outside my apartment. He said he wanted to take me, to get to you. He and the Hellhound had me trapped, and then my mom shot him and the hound with a green crossbow and knocked them out.” I blinked up at him. “My Mom, Nox. My Mom.”

Tears filled my eyes again, hot, and my throat quivered. But now that I was with Nox, his heat and his safety wrapping me up, my mind was clear enough to wade through the overwhelming emotions, and land on one realization.

I threw my arms around Nox, letting the tears come. “Nox, they’re alive! They’re both alive. Dad’s an angel of Hope, and he’s alive.”

I leaned back, and Nox’s smile made my chest swell even more as a laugh escaped me. It was a true smile, and his relief was clear in his bright eyes.

“I can’t believe it. I saw her. I saw my mom, and they’re both alive.”

“Tell me what she said to you.”

I did my best to recount the conversation as accurately as I could. Nox’s smile slowly slipped away as I spoke.

“Beth… This all plays into your theory about the Saints being kidnapped.
